The Eye on AI Leadership Framework

An evolution of the original AI Framework, The Eye on AI Leadership Framework reflects socio-technical, whole-school thinking. NIST’s AI Risk Management Framework(2023) is explicit that AI risks and impacts arise from systems in context - “AI systems are sociotechnical in nature” - which implies that principles must cover not only classroom practice, but governance, leadership decision-making, and organisational processes.
The Eye on AI Framework puts this into practice through three lenses (insight, foresight and oversight). First, all three lenses set out how leaders should look at every AI decision: seeing the technology as it really is rather than as it is marketed, anticipating consequences before they arrive, and keeping humans accountable once tools are in use. Second, six domains set out where leaders should look: Enhance Human, Empower Agency, Enable Safety, Evaluate Governance, Enforce Security and Embed Culture. Third, twenty-four focal points within those domains set out what to look for, from intentionality and equity to explainability and accountability.
Many frameworks treat AI as a question of compliance, capability or curriculum. The Eye on AI Framework treats it as a discipline of attention. Because each lens is applied across every domain, leaders can start wherever their school's priorities lie without losing sight of the whole. A gain in efficiency is tested against its effect on agency, and an exciting new tool is weighed against its safeguarding and security implications. The framework is deliberately independent of any particular product, and it asks questions rather than prescribing answers. That keeps it durable as tools, guidance and expectations change, and it helps leaders build the judgement to meet developments that no framework can yet predict. Its guiding principle is through three perspectives: insight, not illusion; foresight, not hindsight; oversight, not overlook.
